Sew Special: How To Create The Perfect Gift Basket For The Cross-Stitch Lover In Your Life

Keith Hunt

If you have a friend or loved one who enjoys cross stitch, you probably already know how passionate they are about their hobby. When their birthday or other special occasion arises, you won't have to think twice about what gift to give them. Present them with a special gift basket filled with stitching goodies, lovingly created by you, and you can't go wrong.

Get creative with containers

You can choose any basket or container to create your gift. An open basket, wrapped in clear cellophane with a bow, makes a nice presentation. It allows the receiver to see all the goodies inside.

However, containers with lids have their own advantages. For instance, a woven basket with a lid can double as a sewing basket and makes a nice dust-free place to store supplies.

You may also wish to purchase a small sewing basket in a pretty design to fill with sewing supplies. Another good choice is a decorative storage box. You can purchase them in a wide variety of designs to suit the recipient's personality.

Baskets or containers with lids make gift giving easy. No wrapping is necessary.

Think about thread.

The great thing about buying thread for someone who loves to cross stitch is the fact that they can never have too much thread. Thread is at the heart of every project they will make, and having extra thread on hand means fewer trips to the store in the middle of a project.

Choose embroidery floss in a variety of colors, but don't overlook neutral hues. Sewers often use larger amounts of neutral colors, so they will always appreciate having an extra supply of black, gray, beige, taupe, and white floss on hand.

For a real thread treat, look for specialty sewing threads in rayon, silk, and pearl cotton. Flower thread is another specialty sewing thread that is popular for its dramatic sheen. You may also wish to include metallic or glow-in-the-dark threads for something fun.

Fabric is fabulous.

Include a few packs of fabric in your gift basket. Shop for fabric specifically made for cross stitch. Common cross-stitch fabrics are Aida, Hardanger, Fiddler's Cloth, Jobelan, and Lugana. Look for material in 11, 14, 16, and 18 count.

Most stitching projects use a neutral color of fabric. You will do best to stick with white, off-white, beige, or antique when it comes to cross-stitch fabric color.

Notions are nifty.

Toss a pack or two of cross-stitch needles into your gift basket. Make sure you buy needles suitable for the hobby. Tapestry needles in size 24 or 26 work well with many fabrics. For a nice touch, look for gold-plated needles. They cost a few dollars more but look elegant.

Look for small, medium, and large plastic stitching hoops. Many come in bright colors. Purchase one in the recipient's favorite color for a fun treat.

Thread cutters, small scissors, and craft gloves will also be appreciated. Clip-on lights and magnetic project holders are also good choices.

Creating a loving gift is easy when you have a friend or family member who loves to cross stitch. You will feel good knowing you designed your own gift basket, and the recipient will enjoy a gift that keeps on giving with each new project they begin. About Me
Crafting For Fun

A few months ago, I started realizing that I didn't have a lot of fun things to do during my free time. Instead of sitting around the house, I decided to try something new and start crafting. I worked on making a few wreaths for around my house and for the front door, and it was really incredible to see the difference that the hand-made additions made. I was able to enjoy my space instead of simply living in it, and it was like a breath of fresh air. This blog is all about crafting for fun and making the most of your free time.
